So, Your Coach Is Named “Skip”?

Only a few details remain to be worked out today before Skip Holtz is introduced at USF. This is a good hire; East Carolina has made a name for itself the last couple years with big wins over Virginia Tech and West Virginia to open 2008 (on the way to the C-USA title). Still, if I were a Bulls’ fan, I’d be a bit underwhelmed. Holtz will build on the foundation Jim Leavitt built, but it remains to be seen if he can take a BCS program to a conference title. But I reckon there’s only one way to find out!

So do the early list of candidates for the East Carolina opening include a certain pirate from Texas?

I am one of those concerned USF fans. I think this situation would be sub-ideal for any potential new coach. I liken it to person who just got out of a messy relationship, trying to date right away. This is the first time USF has hired a “new coach,” and I think the relationship will be strained. Moreover, Skip isn’t a particularly strong recruiter in Florida, and his record at ECU, while quite passable isn’t awe-inspiring. Leavitt himself was quite a domineering figure within the program, I think there will be some additional snags in the adjustment process getting used to a coach that is likely less controlling, on top of all of the usual issues that accompany such a transition. My prediction is that Skip “to My Lou” Holtz will skip away (I am soo cleva…) after a few years once the rebound coaching phase is over.

@DanGr: I’d imagine the list of candidates for the ECU job consists of: Lou Holtz, Mike Leach, and Ron Prince.
